BITUMINOUS MATERIALS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF BLACK-TOPPED ROADS

To ensure that maintenance work keeps a pavement fit for the smooth flow of traffic under normal conditions, a knowledge is essential of the type of construction and materials available for the efficient rectification of any defects observed. This is of great importance in the case of bituminous pavements for which a variety of specifications are available. In the UK and USA for example, the type and grade of binder for bituminous pavements to suit climatic and traffic conditions is recommended while in India the choice is left to the user and availability of binder is the deciding factor for this choice. The paper deals with the need for the production of various types and grades of binders essential for successfull maintenance of flexible pavements. (TRRL)
