MAINTENANCE OPERATION IN THE FIELD FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE OF ROADS FOR ALL SEASONS

A badly maintained road, besides reducing the life of the road, will result in increased vehicular fuel consumption and generally increased operating costs. To overcome deficiencies of the highway maintenance system described by the author in Goa, it is necessary to enforce controls and to adopt specifications and design procedures considering relevant factors such as location, climatic conditions, strength characteristics, drainage and traffic loads. The paper briefly details the introduction of such policies and suggests measures to improve the serviceability of such rural roads using improved pavement design and drainage specifications as well as the use of local laterite and lateritic murram road materials.
