SUMMARY OF IRC CODE OF PRACTICE FOR MAINTENANCE OF BITUMINOUS SURFACES OF HIGHWAYS

The paper presents a summary of the IRC Code of Practice for highway maintenance. Such operations are classified in three groups: 1) routine maintenance which covers such items as the filling of pot-holes and repairing of cracks; 2) periodic maintenance which includes more extensive operations such as applying a seal or renewal coating; and 3) rehabilitation and strengthening which applies to major reconstruction operations to rectify structural deficiencies. The code is divided into 11 sections and covers several phases of maintenance operations including materials, tools and equipment, arrangements for traffic, and overall organisation and management. The paper also discusses the routine surveying of existing pavements to assess physical condition, structural capacity and roughness. (TRRL)
