SETTING PRIORITIES FOR ROAD MAINTENANCE

The paper argues that it is necessary to allocate limited maintenance resources in a way that most nearly satisfies the objective of maintaining a road system to an appropriate standard. This allocation of resources is necessary at all levels in a road maintenance organisation. The authors recommend a simple method for determining the allocation of limited resources and of setting road maintenance priorities. The method is based on the results of road inspections combined with simple road classifications in terms of traffic, soils, topography and climate. (TRRL)
