SYSTEM BS - A HIGHWAY PAVEMENT EVALUATION AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

A pavement evaluation and maintenance management system has been developed for flexible pavement constructions in developing countries. The system described recognises that in such cases there is likely to be a lack of skilled maintenance engineers available to exercise a uniform assessment of pavement condition. In addition, a standard assessment is required by central authorities with limited funds for budgeting purposes. The concept described offers a relatively rapid assessment, carried out by trained staff working to closely controlled guidelines, in which the data is processed by a microcomputer which sorts the maintenance requirements into priority order and gives costings. In the second stage of the pavement evaluation process mechanical equipment can be used to verify the initial determination of the defective lengths of pavement. (TRRL)
