EXPERIMENTAL TEST RESULTS FOR FLEXURE AND DIRECT TENSION OF FIBRE CEMENT COMPOSITES
The effectiveness of random fibre reinforcement in a cement-based matrix subjected to tension can vary enormously. At one extreme there is no increase in ultimate tensile strength and an increase in toughness which is barely perceptible. At the other extreme, for the same 1.5% volume fraction of fibres, the ultimate load is almost doubled and the toughness is increased by a factor of more than twenty. The main conditions for the different tensile tests are outlined and the probable major factors contributing to the very diverse behaviour are examined with particular reference to results obtained at Birmingham.
