SHAPE FACTORS OF SOME NON-CYLINDRICAL PIEZOMETERS

In this brief technical note, the authors refer to their review of the shape factors of cylindrical piezometers in the same issue (geotechnique, 1980, 30 (4), 369-84, and comment that no reliable values of shape factor have been published for the circular disc type of piezometer often used in earth dams, under pavements or on the faces of retaining walls. Using their liquid analogue model the authors obtained a value of F = 2.63D for the shape factor of a circular disc piezometer of diameter D, and confirmed an expression for the shape factor of a "Bishop-type" tapered piezometer.
