Sustainable Design of Pervious Concrete Pavement Systems
Pervious concrete pavements designed for stormwater best management practices must simultaneously function as a pavement surface as well as a stormwater detention system. As a result, pervious concrete pavements must meet specific hydrological and structural performance criteria simultaneously. The research presented herein evaluated the performance of a waste-incorporated pervious concrete pavement (PCP) system. This paper describes a two-fold performance criteria testing regimen which evaluated various aspects of the pervious concrete mixture design and established specific mixture design recommendations based upon meeting particular structural and hydrological performance criteria. Eleven mini-mixtures were developed to represent the spectrum of design recommendations among primary literature sources. This testing established a base mixture design which met both the structural and hydrological requirements. Subsequent phases of laboratory testing modified this base mixture design with fly ash to establish recommendations for acceptable limits while utilizing the same two-fold performance criteria. A portion of an existing parking lot was replaced with a PCP test section. This test section was completed utilizing 20% fly ash replacement of cement in the pervious concrete mixture, crushed recycled concrete as the underlying coarse aggregate, and 10% replacement of sand with crushed glass in the fine aggregate layer. Testing of the PCP test section confirmed that the structural and hydrological requirements were met. Lastly, water quality analysis was completed on the effluent stormwater through the PCP system and compared with surface runoff from the asphalt portion of the same parking lot.
