Determining a Pedestrian Route Choice Model Through a Photo Survey
This paper provides insights into pedestrians’ route choice behavior within city centers. It investigates how and to which extent different characteristics of the pedestrian’s physical environment influence their route choices. A content analysis is applied to the existing body of the literature in order to identify urban environmental attributes which affect route choices. This review revealed that, in addition to travel time, the five attributes most frequently mentioned in literature are building type, land use, and the presence of vegetation, other pedestrians and motorized traffic. A Stated Preference (SP) experiment was designed to further investigate the influence of these five attributes. The choice situations were presented to the participants by means of several pairs of photos, from which the participant had to choose the most attractive one. The influence of the factors on pedestrians’ route choice is estimated by means of a Multinomial Logit model (MNL). The results show that pedestrians prefer old-residential and modern-commercial walking environments. The presence of greenery and other pedestrians were also found to increase the attractiveness of route choices. Conversely, the presence of motorized traffic was found to have a negative impact on route choice decisions. When applying the estimated parameters, optimal pedestrian urban environment could be determined and attractive public walkways could be identified. These insights may help to improve the design of pedestrian-oriented cities
