Shopping After Work: Space Time Accessibility and Trip Generation

Accessibility has long been considered as an important factor to influence trip generation, especially non-work trips. However, the results of empirical studies were rather conflicting. This paper revisits this issue by incorporating space time accessibility, a different concept of accessibility from place based measures, in a shopping trip generation model using data from a GPS based activity travel survey in Shangdi, Beijing. The results suggest that space time accessibility shows significant positive effect on shopping trip after work. The induced shopping demand due to Staggered Work Hours, a travel demand management policy, is predicted with the trip generation model incorporating space time accessibility. It is concluded that space time accessibility is significantly associated with individual’s activity decision and can be useful to inform policy makers about time-related policies.
