California Transportation Management Centers: Past, Present, and Future
This article reports on existing Transportation Management Center (TMC) capabilities in California. In order to determine the best way to integrate advanced ITS functions into California TMC operations, the concept of Computer Integrated Transportation (CIT) was presented to focus groups of TMC managers and staff. While participants almost unanimously agreed that ITS has improved TMC working relationships with other agencies, significant obstacles still need to be addressed regarding timeframe, coordination, broadcast orientation, new technologies, mutual interests, and cooperation.
