Collection and assessment of instantaneous vehicle emissions on street network

On-board experimental setup for emission measurement in a passenger car is presented. It is based on integration of gas analyzer for collecting vehicle emissions and GPS unit for driving pattern data. On-board measurement provides representative, real emission data for specific location and in all weather conditions, overcoming that way, the deficiencies of laboratory and road measurements. The theory of system control is used to identify the response of gas analyzer in controlled environment. Sensor response delay in resulting emission is reduced using inverse transfer function and Matlab (System Identification and Simulink). Collected data represent a base for modal emission models. This paper presents the part of work related to vehicle emissions which refers to method development to ensure a good interpretation of the transient emission measurements. Future research will be directed toward similar survey on different vehicles classes according to engine size, fuel type and kilometers traveled in order to form a complete emission inventory needed for estimations based on traffic flow modeling.
