Recycling Materials and Techniques to Improve Sustainability: Delaware Department of Transportation’s Model
For the Delaware Department of Transportation (DOT), sustainability is defined as economic development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This article describes how Delaware DOT is making use of recycled materials, industrial byproducts, and in-place reclamation and recycling technologies in their road construction and maintenance projects. Delaware DOT’s recycling program follows the “three-E” framework: environment, economics, and engineering. The success of these sustainability efforts was achieved with support from industry partners, contractors and the Federal Highway Administration.
