DISCUSSION OF SETTLEMENT OF STRIP LOAD ON ELASTIC-PLASTIC SOIL

THE AUTHORS SHOW THAT THE STUDY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF ELASTIC-PLASTIC STATES OF STRESS AND STRAIN THROUGH A GIVEN TEST FROM ZERO TO FAILURE LOADING MAY GIVE ANSWERS TO SOME IMPORTANT PROBLEMS IN SOIL MECHANICS. MR. HANSEN STATES THAT THE PAPER SHOWS THAT EVEN WITH THE SIMPLEST POSSIBLE ASSUMPTIONS OF PERFECT ELASTIC-PLASTIC MATERIALS, THE SOLUTIONS REPRESENT TO AN AMAZING DEGREE ALL RELEVANT PROPERTIES OF THE TRUE SOLUTIONS FOR REAL MATERIALS. THE WRITER AGREES WITH THE AUTHORS THAT THE PLASTIC ZONE DOES NOT MUCH RESEMBLE THAT USED TO DERIVE THE PRANDTL FAILURE LOAD. IT IS DOUBTFUL, HOWEVER, WHETHER THE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION INDICATED BY HILL GIVES ANY CLUE TO THIS DISCREPANCY. SOME OF THE DETAILS IN THE SPREAD OF THE PLASTIC ZONE MAY BE DUE TO THE CALCULATION METHOD, WHICH MAY GIVE PREFERENCE TO ONE MEMBER OF A FAMILY OF EQUALLY KINEMATICALLY ADMISSIBLE DISPLACEMENT FIELDS IN THE FINAL STATE OF FAILURE. MR. VALLIAPPAN COMMENTS ON THE NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF AN IMPORTANT PROBLEM IN SOIL MECHANICS. THE AUTHOR STATED THAT THE INCREMENTAL ANALYSIS IN THE PAPER COULD BE CARRIED OUT BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD. THE WRITER SHOWS THAT MANY INVESTIGATIONS IN THE FIELD OF NON-LINEAR STRESS ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND ROCK MECHANIC PROBLEMS HAVE USED THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD AS A TOOL FOR THE ANALYSIS. THE ANALYSIS SHOWS THAT THE PLASTIC ZONE EXTENDS FAR GREATER THAN THAT PREDICTED BY PRANDTL'S THEORY. IN A SIMILAR CASE, THE WRITER PROPOSED A METHOD KNOWN AS 'INITIAL STRESS METHOD' TO SOLVE PLASTICITY PROBLEMS USING FINITE ELEMENT TECHNIQUES.
