DISCUSSION OF DEFORMATION OF SAND IN HYDROSTATIC COMPRESSION

THE CONCERN EXPRESSED BY PARKIN, GERRARD AND WILLOUGHBY OVER POSSIBLE ANISOTROPY OF THE SAMPLE DUE TO THE METHOD OF PREPARATION IS JUSTIFIED. SINCE THE DEFORMATION OF THE SAND UNDER HYDROSTATIC COMPRESSION WAS RELATIVELY SMALL, IT WAS FELT THAT IT WOULD BE BETTER TO TEST FOR SAMPLE ANISOTROPY BY TESTING TWO IDENTICALLY PREPARED SAMPLES UNDER DIFFERENT ORIENTATIONS OF THE SAME MAJOR AND MINOR PRINCIPAL STRESSES IN A SHEAR TEST USING THE SOIL TEST BOX. IF THE SAMPLES WERE ISOTROPIC, THE STATES OF DEFORMATION IN THEM WOULD BE SIMILAR, EVEN IF THE DIRECTION OF THE MAJOR PRINCIPAL STRESS WAS VERTICAL IN ONE AND HORIZONTAL IN THE OTHER. THE RESULTS OF THE TEST SHOWED THAT THIS WAS THE CASE. MAKHLOUF SUGGESTED THAT CONSIDERATION SHOULD ALSO BE GIVEN TO REGULAR PACKINGS GIVING 8 AND 10 CONTACTS PER SPHERE, WHICH WOULD, THEREFORE, RESULT IN A CLOSER APPROXIMATION OF THE PACKING OF RANDOM ASSEMBLIES OF SPHERES. THE AUTHORS, HOWEVER, REASONED THAT ONLY THE USE OF THE LOOSEST AND DENSEST PACKINGS, WITH 6 AND 12 CONTACTS PER SPHERE RESPECTIVELY, WOULD COVER THE WHOLE RANGE OF POROSITIES THAT ARE NORMALLY ENCOUNTERED IN REAL GRANULAR SOILS. SINCE IN THE PRESENT ANALYSIS ONLY THE POROSITY OF THE GRANULAR SOIL IS USED TO DETERMINE WHAT PROPORTIONS OR EACH OF THE CONSTITUENT PACKINGS ARE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE A MODEL WITH THE SAME POROSITY, ONLY TWO REGULAR PACKINGS CAN BE CONSIDERED AS BEING THE BASIC COMPONENTS. /ASCE/ REFERENCES: DEFORMATION OF SAND IN HYDROSTATIC COMPRESSION, H-Y KO, R.
