Festival of lights

Developments in lighting, from organic and infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to holographic laser technology, are presented, with a view to safety. With the rise of semiconductor technology, the use of LEDs is increasing, facilitating safety features from infrared detection to spotlight technology. They are said to provide the perfect trade-off between performance and cost. Glare-free high beam systems are now accessible that reduce light intensity towards other cars, while maintaining illumination of the road. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are another semiconductor development, which is pleasing to designers, as they produce a very natural, surface light; although engineers are still struggling with temperatures in excess of 80 degrees Celsius and 85% humidity, and their cost makes them prohibitive currently. Laser diodes benefits are also mentioned, but they are still offset by some technological challenges. Infrared LEDs can be used to contribute to lower accident rates by detecting obstacles in advance. They can also be used in triggering alarms by detecting drowsy drivers' eyelid blinking frequency. Holographic warnings can be projected from the rear of a car to warn drivers if they are getting too close.
