Bridge management systems: an overview of assessment ratings

This paper presents the basic requirements and stages of a bridge management system and the factors that influence system effectiveness. The main objective of this paper, however, is to present an alternative rating system that has been proven to offer beneficial information for the assessment and planning of infrastructure maintenance and management. This alternative rating system has been adopted by four national roads authorities in different parts of the world who have recognised the benefits in this methodology, namely; Taiwan, United Arab Emirates and South Africa with other smaller authorities these countries including Canada adopting this methodology. Various examples demonstrating the assessment of inspected bridge defects will be described to demonstrate the application of this alternative rating system.
