SUMMARY AND REVIEW OF PART 1 OF THE SYMPOSIUM ON PILE FOUNDATIONS

THE PURPOSE OF THE SYMPOSIUM WAS TO REVIEW CURRENT PRACTICE AND KNOWLEDGE IN THE DESIGN AND BEHAVIOR OF PILE FOUNDATIONS. TOPICS WERE CHOSEN TO COVER THE BROAD AREA OF INTEREST, AND AUTHORS WERE INVITED TO MAKE PRESENTATIONS BECAUSE OF THEIR EXPERTISE AND PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE IN THE PARTICULAR SUBAREAS. THE FIRST 4 PAPERS DEAL ESSENTIALLY WITH PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF PILE FOUNDATIONS, SUCH AS CHOICE OF PILE TYPES AND TECHNIQUES FOR DRIVING AND ESTIMATING PILE BEARING CAPACITIES. THESE 4 PAPERS ARE SUMMARIZED. /AUTHOR/
