A REVIEW OF RECENT RESEARCH ON STRENGTH AND CONSOLIDATION OF SOFT SENSITIVE CLAYS

STRENGTH AND CONSOLIDATION BEHAVIOR OF SOILS ARE BOTH FUNCTIONS OF THE SHEAR RESISTANCE THAT CAN BE DEVELOPED AT THE CONTACTS BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL MINERAL PARTICLES. FACTORS INFLUENCING BONDS DEVELOPED AT THESE CONTACTS MUST BE CONSIDERED IN DESCRIBING THESE BEHAVIOURS. DISCUSSIONS OF THE EFFECTS OF SAMPLING ON THESE PROPERTIES ARE PRESENTED. DIFFICULTIES ARE ENCOUNTERED IN RELATING STRENGTH PARAMETERS DETERMINED IN VARIOUS TEST METHODS IN BOTH THE EFFECTIVE STRESS AND TOTAL STRESS CONCEPTS WITH OTHER TEST METHODS AND WITH OBSERVED LANDSLIDE BEHAVIOUR. PART OF THIS IS CAUSED BY DIFFERENT FAILURE CRITERIA IN THE TESTS. ANOTHER PART IS INVOLVED WITH A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE ACTUAL PROGRESSION OF LANDSLIDES. PRECONSOLIDATION PRESSURES MAY BE EFFECTED BY OTHER THAN PHYSICAL FACTORS. SECONDARY CONSOLIDATION IS STILL A LITTLE UNDERSTOOD PHENOMENON. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN IN CONSOLIDATION TESTING, ESPECIALLY IN RESEARCH PROJECTS. /CGRA/
