Development of a new rubberised binder and its characteristics
In recent years, the wear of the pavement surface by studded tyres during winter as well as the rutting caused by the plastic flow during the summer especially on heavy traffic roads, has become a serious problem in Japan. It is, therefore, highly desired that a new type of pavement material with improved anti wear and anti flow properties be developed in order to cope with the situation. It has been found that addition of rubber to straight asphalt is effective in improving these properties. This paper focuses on a new rubberised binder, named tsukuba no 1, developed for this purpose. Although close consideration has not been given on rubber properties added in most of traditional rubberised asphalt, the viscosity of the rubber for tsukuba no 1 was specified by moonie value. Laboratory tests were performed to decide the best mix proportion of rubber with various moonie values. The addition of rubber makes workability worse because of its high consistency. It was confirmed by full scale paving test that the mixture could be placed using ordinary construction machines (a).
