Study on bitumen with a view to improving road surfacing
This study investigates the effects of environmental and weathering conditions on the properties of field bitumen with a view to assessing the ageing of road surfacing. Durability of blended bitumen is evaluated by constructing an ageing model that simulates subgrade moisture, capillarity, atmospheric temperature and solar ultra violet radiation. The performance of steel slag as wearing course aggregate in the av-ivc mix design presently used by the public works department of Singapore is investigated. The effects of rubber and antistripping additive on ageing and stripping characteristics were studied. The study has conclusively shown that the bitumen used for road surfacings in Singapore undergoes rapid ageing under the influence of environmental factors. Blending bitumen with rubber seems to improve the durability of bitumen. Antistripping additive does help in improving the stripping resistance (a).
