Vejman - a microcomputer supported road data bank and pavement management system

To facilitate the local road administrations of the danish municipalities a microcomputer supported program system is being developed. The system - vejman - is composed of a road data bank and a pavement maintenance management application named vejops. Extensions for example, traffic safety statistics and planning are considered. After a brief introduction on road data banks in general and on the main factors which have led to the development of the vejman system, the system is presented. The paper outlines the contents of the road data bank and describes in more detail how the pavement management application operates. The vejops application is based on a dialogue with the user. Visual condition surveys provide information on the pavement condition, while measurements are only called for to decide whether or not strengthening is needed. This concept makes it possible for the local road administration to carry out the pavement management process by themselves. Appendices give facts about denmark and about danish roads and sum up the considerations on computer hardware for the system (a).
