Development of an earthwork planning system on a microcomputer

As various conditions surrounding road earthworks have become more complicated and severe, it is desirable to rationalise the formulation of earthwork planning. This study is an attempt to develop a systematic methodology for the formulation of planning. The system is supported by hardware comprised mainly of a microcomputer and is composed of two stages: (1) the process of preparing alternative plans and (2) the process of comprehensive evaluation. The former prepares alternative plans with the planning parameters corrected as required and is an interactive system on microcomputer. The latter is to evaluate the alternative plans generally with respect to multiple objectives, and in this study, utilises the multi attribute utility theory. In the case study, the system is applied to the earthwork planning of an expressway. Twelve alternative plans are prepared and evaluated with respect to the construction cost, term of works and construction noise. The authors confirm that the system effectively fulfills its functions (a).
