The survey method and evaluation systems for the pavement of expressways in Japan

This paper discusses japanese research into the damage caused to expressway pavements, their evaluation, and their maintenance and rehabilitation. Eighty per cent of the repairs required to expressway pavement in Japan result from rutting, and there is an urgent need for a maintenance and rehabilitation program. Research over the past eight years has concluded that the rate of development of rutting differs from one district to another and that it is possible to forecast the rate of development of this rutting. A maintenance and evaluation system for expressway pavements is presented in the paper (a).
