This article discusses how a new interagency initiative may help give regional planning a boost. The Interagency Partnership for Sustainable Communities is implemented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, but coordinated with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The program addresses two critical tasks in regional planning: defining the region and organizing it by common interests. Part of this initiative is a grant program to support more livable and sustainable communities. One grantee is the New York-Connecticut Sustainable Communities Consortium, which received $3.5 million in planning grants in 2011. The consortium is coordinating 16 interrelated projects in the region, many centered around the commuter rail network.
