Livable Centers in the Greater Houston Region - Planning Tools to Measure Benefits

The greater Houston region, the fifth largest metro region in the U.S., is projected to grow by an additional 3.5 million people by the year 2040. Strategies to effectively coordinate transportation and land use, and to measure the benefits of doing so, are actively needed by the Houston region as well as other growing regions of the nation. Without coordination of transportation and land use, traffic growth will overburden the regional transportation system. Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Livable Centers Program is one strategy being explored in the Houston region to address these challenges. Livable Centers are safe, convenient, and attractive areas where people can live, work and play. This paper addresses several areas: the need for Livable Centers, research/innovative approaches to demonstrate benefits of the Livable Centers approach including a density/benefits calculator, and areas for partnership.
