Illinois Tollway Weigh in Motion Enforcement Program
The Illinois Tollway has begun implementing a program of weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems to protect the recent $6.3B investment in congestion relief, open road tolling, widening, and reconstruction of the entire system. Historically, the Illinois Tollway has relied on portable scales and occasional enforcement details at Barrier Toll Plazas to monitor the weights of vehicles on the system. With the application of WIM at select locations, the Illinois Tollway now has both better enforcement and a better idea of exactly what trucks do weigh and their impact on the pavement. This allows the Illinois Tollway to target enforcement where it is most needed and better recover revenue from trucks that are impacting system infrastructure the most, as well as gather detailed load data on the critical pavement infrastructure.
