I35W Design-Build ITS Elements for 2010 Annual Meeting
On August 1, 2007 the I-35W/St. Anthony Falls Bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River during the PM rush hour, severing a heavily-used commuter and commercial principle arterial section of roadway serving the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Prior to the collapse, the bridge served 140,000 average daily traffic (ADT), 5,700 of which were estimated as commercial trips. Surrounding roadways in the metropolitan area system experienced a high level of increased congestion immediately, as travelers sought alternate routes predominantly during peak periods but also faced significant detours in accessing the downtown Minneapolis and University of Minnesota campus areas. This severe impact on the regional transportation network required an immediate response and solution, requiring the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) to expedite the process of replacing the collapsed bridge.
