IMPROVED METHOD OF CHARACTERIZING BITUMENS BY THEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

UNE METHODE AMELIOREE DE CARACTERISATION DES BITUMES PAR LEURS PROPRIETES MECANIQUES.

FOR A LONG TIME EMPIRICAL METHODS SUCH AS PENETRATION AND TEMPERATURE RING AND BALL TESTS HAVE BEEN USED TO CHARACTERIZE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BITUMEN. THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE LAWS OF PENETRATION VARIATION AS A FUNCTION OF THE TEMPERATURE AND LOADING TIME, OF VARIATION IN VISCOSITY MEASURED AT TEMPERATURES HIGHER THAN THE RING AND BALL SOFTENING POINT AS A FUNCTION OF THE TEMPERATURE AND USES THE RELATION BETWEEN VISCOSITY AND PENETRATION TO SHOW THAT THE CONSISTENCY OF BITUMEN (MEASURED IN PENETRATION OR VISCOSITY) CAN BE PLOTTED VERY SIMPLY ON A CHART AS A FUNCTION OF THE TEMPERATURE. THE PLOTTING OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BITUMEN ON THIS CHART FACILITATES THEIR CLASSIFICATION INTO SEVERAL CATEGORIES IN RELATION WITH SPECIFICATIONS. THIS ENABLES TO PLOT MORE ACCURATELY THE SENSITIVITY TO TEMPERATURE TOGETHER WITH THE REFERENCE TEMPERATURE (THAT WHICH GIVES BITUMEN AN 800 PENETRATION) OF A GIVEN BITUMEN. USED IN THE VAN DER POEL CHART THESE VALUES IMPROVE THE ACCURACY WITH WHICH TO CALCULATE THE STIFFNESS MODULUS OF A GIVEN BITUMEN UNDER SPECIFIC CONDITIONS.
