ATTEMPT AT CLASSIFYING VIBRATING ROLLERS

ESSAI DE CLASSIFICATION DES ROULEAUX VIBRANTS.

THE CLASSIFICATION PROPOSED IS BASED ON THE MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF EXISTING MACHINES AND GIVES PRIORITY TO THE PART WHICH VIBRATES. ACCORDING TO THIS CLASSIFICATION, THERE EXIST 7 CLASSES OF MACHINES: (1) TOWED UNIAXIAL ROLLER; (2) SELF-TOWED SINGLE WHEELED ROLLER; (3) SELF-PROPELLED UNIAXIAL ROLLER; (4) TRANSVERSE OR LONGITUDINAL TANDEM ROLLER; (5) SELF-PROPELLED MIXED VIBRATING-PNEUMATIC-TYRED ROLLER; (6) DUPLEX ROLLER WITH CONTROLLED OR FREE VIBRATION; (7) COMBINATION OF COMPACTION TRAINS. THIS CLASSIFICATION HAS ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES. THE DISADVANTAGES COME FROM THE CONFUSION BETWEEN THE CONCEPT OF AXIS AND THAT OF ROLLER AND FROM THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT BASED ON COMPACTION PERFORMANCE CRITERIA. THE ADVANTAGES ARE: (1) SIMPLE CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA AND EASE OF UNDERSTANDING HOW THE MACHINES ARE CONSTRUCTED; (2) POSSIBILITY OF ANALYZING THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE MAIN CONSTRUCTION PARAMETERS; (3) POSSIBILITY OF USING THIS CLASSIFICATION FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A TWO-ENTRY CLASSIFICATION BY INTRODUCING WITHIN A GIVEN MORPHOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION A HIERARCHY BASED FOR EXAMPLE ON THE STATIC MASS CRITERION PER SQUARE CENTIMETRE OF VIBRATING GENERATOR, OR BY CONSIDERING THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE MORPHOLOGY AND THE DYNAMIC PARAMETER VALUES SUSCEPTIBLE TO CHARACTERIZE THE EFFICIENCY OF A VIBRATORY ROLLER.
