Bigger and better

The use of ITS to address a number of highway issues in Australia is discussed. The growth in traffic anticipated on Australia's roads and problems in producing a coherent ITS strategy due to the size of the country, theuneven distribution of population and the autonomy of states are outlined. A number of schemes are underway, however, including the interoperability of all toll roads in Australia by means of one e-tag on the windshield. Following the use of Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) in Europe ITS Australia is supporting the introduction of an ITS spectrum at 5.9 GHz in order to make use of all the global technologies to be fitted in new vehicles. DSRC technology will be particularly useful in connection with railway crossings where a number of simple technologies including sensors, GPS and solar power could be combined to provide information to drivers. Details are given of plans to introduce a traffic message channel onto portable navigation devices. It is suggested that the E-Transport document produced five years ago by ITS Australia could be updated and used as the basis of a national plan to ensure integration of the various ITS technologies and a national approach to transportation across Australia.
