The bird takes flight

An account is given of the construction of Canary Wharf Station, part of London's Crossrail project, a 118 km long east-west rail link due to be operational in 2017. The station will be located in the north dock of West India Quay with the base slab 16 m below the dock bed and 25 m below water level. The structure comprises 4 basement levels below water level, 2 levels of station concourse above water level and a covered rooftop park. Details are given of the installation of 18.5 m long, 1.2 m diameter steel tubular Giken piles which are being driven into the dock bed to create 3 sides of a cofferdam. The varying ground conditions and the dewatering process required are described. The phases of construction planned are then outlined with details of further piling, the use to be made of the material excavated and the proposed passage through the cofferdam of the tunnel boring machine bringing the line from the east in 2010. Canary Wharf station is on the critical path for tunnelling and will be the first station to be completed.
