Life Cycle Analysis of a New Composite Material for Pavement Waterproofing

This paper describes how maintenance is required during the pavement service life in order to make it deteriorate according to its design assumptions. In this context, crack sealing and general waterproofing of the pavement are important preventive maintenance actions, which can slow the deterioration and reduce the life-cost of the pavement. Significant innovation has occurred in both, preventive maintenance materials (durability, performances, costs) and application methods (application speed, optimal climatic conditions, etc.). In this context, a new composite material for waterproofing interlayer membranes, which can be “cold applied” (with great benefit for environment and workers), was evaluated in full-scale experiments. This paper presents the initial results of the field performance evaluation and a lifecycle cost analysis to quantitatively show the potential savings for the road authority and the benefits of the users (in terms of improved condition of the pavement surface). The methodology used is of general validity as it can be readily expanded to evaluate other technologies.
