The Costliest Ride

Paratransit is door-to-door transit service for the disabled mandated by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. Paratransit can be inefficient, and even when well planned and well managed, very expensive. A variety of new approaches to providing transportation services to the disabled are being examined by cities nationwide in light of the global economic downturn. Pittsburgh's new conditional eligibility system and King County, Washington's personalized transit training program are highlighted.
