The Jones Act Under NAFTA and Its Effects on the Canadian Shipbuilding Industry
This paper examines the premise of the Jones Act (the Merchant Marine Act of 1920) and the condition of the shipbuilding industry in Canada before and after the Canada-U.S. Trade Agreement and the North American Free Trade Agreement. The paper suggests some conclusions regarding the impact of the Jones Act on the Canadian shipbuilding industry, and it also presents some plausible policy positions for the Canadian government in its relationship with the U.S.
