Commissioning of the South LRT Extension in Edmonton

This paper shares the knowledge learned in commissioning the South Light Rail Transit (LRT) extension in Edmonton. Based on the experience the authors feel that this information could help other jurisdictions to reduce rework, ensure client satisfaction, complete commissioning activities on time, within budget, and deliver a fully functional LRT system. To date, commissioning of the South LRT extension for the City of Edmonton has provided the following valuable lessons; establish a plan and do it early; set up the commissioning organization including a steering committee supported by the commissioning team; engage a commissioning consultant; allocate dedicated resources; use process mapping to document key processes; encourage owner involvement; integrate commissioning with design; establish a database to document test records; maintain an accurate test schedule and communicate judiciously with all stakeholders. The common thread to all the learned lessons is to implement a full cycle commissioning methodology by integrating commissioning activities early into all design – construction processes.
