Internal Wi-Fi: Piggybacking Essential Business Applications on a Rider-Attracting Wi-Fi Network

This article examines the future for piggybacking business applications on Wi-Fi networks for commuters riding transit. The author notes that IT planners can find other uses for Wi-Fi on transit including security cameras, fare collection, real-time information, stop announcements, etc. The challenge, however, is interoperability. The author points to the King County Department of Transportation in Seattle, which has an extensive 802.11g Wi-Fi plan using ERG’s smart card, which needs to work with the on-board Motorola radio system. Its other systems work with an on-board Cisco bridge. The author also describes upcoming 802.11 standards and security and privacy issues, and points to several transit agencies, such as the Utah Transit Authority that have made progress in this area and how they managed to do it.
