Evaluation and Comparative Analysis of Rubberized Asphalt Performance in California

As part of a larger study to assess the performance of in-service pavements in California, and hence the success of the California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans’) pavement design and rehabilitation procedures, the performance of many special pavement materials and treatments was evaluated. Included in this evaluation were fifty-four Rubber Asphalt Concrete (RAC) sections located in three of California’s environmental zones – Central Valley (CV), North Coast (NC) and Bay Area (BA) – and six of Caltrans’ Districts (1, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 11). Field testing for these sections included Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing, roughness survey, distress survey, and core/bore extraction. Laboratory tests were conducted on the cores, including bulk specific gravity, maximum specific gravity (RICE), asphalt content, and gradation aggregate. Analysis was performed on the data collected from these sections to evaluate the performance of RAC in different environmental zones. This analysis was focused on the actual field performance rather than laboratory predicted performance. The field performance was evaluated with respect to the in-situ structural capacity, distress condition, roughness condition, and consistency of construction. Also, the expected Structural Service Life, Distress Service Life, and Roughness Service Life were estimated for all treatments based on the field-observed conditions. This paper describes the observed field performance of the RAC sections and compares their performance across the different environmental zones. It also presents results of additional analysis performed to compare the performance of two different applications of RAC – rubberized Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI-R) and Fabric SAMI (SAMI-F) – in the CV environmental zone.
