Structural and geotechnical solutions for Esmonde Interchange, Auckland

Esmonde Interchange is currently under construction as part of the wider Northern Busway project, on Auckland’s North Shore. The interchange lies in a coastal/estuarine area and contains varied topography, geology and ecology. Geotechnical issues are complex and have required innovative solutions for foundations of structures, embankments and approach ramps. Polystyrene blocks have been used in lightweight fills, soil nail retaining walls installed to support remodelled bridge abutments, and dynamic impact roller compaction used on some areas of historic landfill. Varied new structures have been added to the interchange, and some existing structures have been retrofitted to meet the new requirements and layout. The full range of proposed structures is described and two structures requiring retrofit techniques are reviewed. One 50 year old single span concrete T-beam bridge was strengthened using carbon fibre panels bonded to beam soffits and sides. To accommodate the changed road geometry of another bridge of similar age, the existing concrete box structure was modified by casting an overlay slab with lightweight void formers. This structure was also strengthened (using both concrete, post-tensioning and carbon fibre) at the central pier head and pier cylinders to enhance static and seismic capacity.
