Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting History
This article chronicles the history of aircraft firefighting. The emphasis of this piece is on the Aircraft Rescue Fire Firefighters (ARFF) and the equipment and vehicles used to fight fires. The discussion includes enhancements to the ways aircraft fires are fought, such new firefighting as Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) and dry chemicals and vehicles having High Reach Extendable Turrets (HRET) equipped with specialized nozzles. The article also discusses the role that training makes in enhancing the capabilities of ARFF personnel in expanding their tactics for fires that now include many more composite materials and quantities of fuel on aircraft, as well as many more passengers.
