Researching Sydney’s Road Needs – Arrows to the Future

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the main issues which will affect Sydney’s transport infrastructure needs over the next two decades. The paper begins by identifying the areas that will require methods to assist transport planners in the development of a more complete understanding of the emerging mechanisms affecting urban transport systems. Sydney is a global city that is forecast to reach five million people in the near future. A necessary response to this sustained prosperity and competitiveness is the expedient movement of goods and people. The city is working on the completion of the Sydney Orbital, a motorway standard ring road over 100 kilometers in length. The maturation of the strategic road network raises issues about the future for land, air and sea freight. The paper also describes implications for the ongoing planning and development of Sydney’s strategic road network.
