Gravity modelling weighs in
Gravity modelling is used in transport assessments when considering future development proposals. URS is the holder of the UK Highways Agency's East Midlands development control commission contract and receives development proposals that require traffic-impact assessments. A more efficient system was developed. It had to automate the existing manual process, be simple to use, reduce complete assessment times and produce results in a format that could be analysed elsewhere. It also had to help identify links and junctions likely to experience high levels of traffic. The development of a number of versions of the software is outlined. These include ODYSSEUS (Origin-Destination Ynitial Speculative Site Evaluation and Usage Simulation), GRAVMODEL-X2 and EMPATHOGRAM (East Midlands PATH-Orientated GRAvity Model).
