Increased freight traffic puts pressure on Europe's roads
This article looks at the effect on European road expansion programmes of greater road freight volumes. Europe's central states are the most affected by the heavier road use. The situation in Austria and Hungary is compared. Austria has successfully expanded its motorway network but an electronic toll collection project was badly delayed by government caution on public/private partnerships (PPPs). Hungary's experience of using a PPP was on a toll road project that failed to give the expected returns and this adversely affected the market. However, a new project shows that lessons have been successfully learned.
