Holmethorpe underbridge - a race against time

Holmethorpe underbridge is part of a development scheme being undertaken by Linden Homes near Redhill, Surrey, UK. It will form part of a new relief road improving connections to the A23 London to Brighton road and the M25 motorway. The portal structure was built parallel to the railway track and was inserted into a railway embankment in December 2004 during a 101-hour possession. A new 2-lane highway will be constructed to allow traffic to pass under the railway between Ormside Road and Frenches Road. The reinforced concrete deck slab of the underbridge and the wingwalls are fully integral with the abutments. The factors that influenced the construction of the underbridge are discussed. The key issue was to be able to move it into position and complete the construction during the possession period. The portal structure was transported using Self Propelled Mobile Transporter units. The design process and construction of the underbridge and other preparation works are described.
