DYNAMIC TESTING OF RAILWAY BALLAST: USING THE SLAKE DURABILITY TEST TO ESTIMATE BALLAST LIFE

There are no current durability tests in the Railway Ballast Standards for new ballast (Railtrack Line Specification, 1998) or for ballast returned from a ballast cleaner (Railtrack Line Specification, 1996). This is considered to be lacking as the trains impose a dynamic loading rather than a point load. This study considers the slake durability test as suitable for railway track bed ballast, and compares the results obtained to those obtained from slake durability tests carried out on other rock types by the British Geological Survey. These results were used to predict the lifetime deterioration of the ballast. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123713.
