TREADING A PATH LEADING TO GREATER RESPECTABILITY
Fleet managers are suspicious of the tyre retreading business, but independent retreaders and tyre-makers are making efforts to clean up retreading's image. An AEA Technology report commissioned by the UK Department of Trade concluded that retreading is an option for managing the environmental burden posed by used tyres. The performance of Michelin's Remix XDA2 is claimed to be the same as that of a new Michelin tyre of the same size and type. Homburg is the first Michelin plant to use a process called microextrusion in the reconstruction of tyre sidewalls. Brief profiles are given of the activities of retreaders Bandvulc, Bandag, Marangoni, and Bridgestone Retread Systems. Marangoni Tread has introduced two new families of tread compound: Zero Oil and Low Oil.
