TECHNICAL TEST SPECIFICATION: RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT TO FATIGUE AT MEDIUM AND LOW TEMPERATURES - SWELLING TENSILE TEST

The draft for the European standard prEN 12697-24 from May 2003 describes four types of bending tests to investigate the resistance of asphalt to fatigue in spite of the fact that the validity of Bernoulli's hypothesis (concerning the permanent evenness of the cross sections) for asphalts is not proved. Consequently the use of the equations of the classical bending theory to evaluate the test results are not admissible in a strict sense. As fifth test procedure the dynamic indirect tensile test at temperatures between T = +2 degrees C and T = +20 degrees C is mentioned, not considering pressure strength of an asphalt with a normal hart bitumen only at temperatures of round about T = -25 degrees C and less is eight times greater than the tensile strength, which is necessary for conducting of a correct test. Because of the deficiencies of the CEN standard, a draft for a technical test specification "Resistance of Asphalt to Fatigue at Medium and Low Temperatures - Swelling Tensile Test" was set up in Germany. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480.
