ACCESSIBLE INTERCITY AND CHARTER-TOUR COACHES
This paper describes the Canadian experience of accessible intercity buses and accessible charter-tour coaches. Intercity bus travel offers one of the most affordable means of long-distance transportation in Canada for elderly people and people with disabilities. Projections for 1995 indicate that about 3.8 million elderly and disabled persons have either physical or sensory deficiencies requiring specific solutions to make door-to-door travel possible within a complete transportation system. Intercity and long-distance bus service for these passengers with special needs can be divided into five categories discussed in terms of issues, existing solutions, developments in progress, lessons learned, and future considerations, with particular emphasis on the perspectives of passengers, operators, and researchers.
