MECHANISTIC ANALYSIS OF FACTORS LEADING TO PUNCHOUT DEVELOPMENT FOR IMPROVED CRCP DESIGN PROCEDURES

This paper discusses show the design of continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP) has traditionally focused on the design of steel reinforcement relative to the development of the crack pattern with little emphasis on how characteristics of the crack patter influence pavement performance. Recent developments associated with the mechanistic-based 2002 Design Guide (under development in NCHRP Project 1-37A) have further reinforced the importance of mechanistic relationships between the design parameters and pavement response to enable pavement performance predictions. To enhance the predictability of CRCP performance, a mechanistically sound relationship that related the design parameters of crack spacing distribution, crack width, load transfer efficiency of the transverse cracks, and support conditions to pavement structural response needs to be incorporated in the design procedure. The results of this effort would benefit the development of a comprehensive mechanistic-based design procedure for CRCP.
