HEAVY-AXLE-LOAD FIELD EVALUATIONS : TAKING FAST INTO REVENUE SERVICE
Revenue-service testing programs are the final step in implementation of new materials, designs, and maintenance methods in heavy axle load applications. The Heavy-Axle-Load Program (HAL) sponsored by the Association of American Railroads and the Federal Railroad Administration is monitoring the performance of selected track components in a variety of conditions that are unavailable at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing, Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (FAST) in Pueblo, Colorado. Results for both programs are being used to update and compare track degradation, economic models and monitor the effects of variables not available at FAST. The HAL revenue-service monitoring program is currently evaluating wear and fatigue of high-hardness rail. The rail steel evaluation done in cooperation with Union Pacific includes six type of high-hardness rail steel. Recent innovations in plastic ties have prompted FAST to investigate plastic tie performance as well.
